Tips on how to keep your American Bully cool in summer.
Australia summer can be quite hot, sometime ranging over 35 degree Celsius (95 Fahrenheit). It is important to make sure you are prepared during hot weather to care for your American Bully. Some Bully are more likely to be susceptible to heat stroke due to their large muscle mass, weight, shorter muzzle.
Where possible have your American Bully indoor with the fan or air-conditioning on. A great indication the weather is warm for your dog is, if you are feeling warm your American Bully would likely be too, also excessive panting is another indication.
However not all home has air-con and not all Bullies dogs like to be indoor all day.
- Provide plenty water for your American Bully, have plenty of fresh cold water in large bowls and containers (ensure they can reach). Additional water bowls throughout your yard and area your American Bully stay are needed.
- Have clamshell or kiddie pool filled with shallow cool water in a shaded area for your American Bullies to take a dip.
- Offer ice pack or wet towel for your American Bully to rest on.
- Offer ice for your Bully to re-hydrate, they can be prepared the night before by filling a clean ice-cream container with water and placing them in the freezer.
- Offer homemade cold and/or frozen treats. They are great replacement to dry warm treats.
- If your American Bully love being outside, provide shade and shelter. Place a shade screen or tarp to reduce direct sunlight.
- Grooming regularly using a brush or de-shedding brush a few days to help remove loose hair and dead skin cell. As loose hair and dead skin cell add more heat to the body.
- Playtime and exercise early in the morning or late afternoon when the weather cool down is best.
- Apply sunscreen to area of your American Bully that are prone to burn, such as the muzzle, mouth, ears, under eye.
- When outdoor always have water readily available with you for your American Bully.
“American Bully cool themselves through panting (breathing with mouth open, slight tongue sticking out), unlike us human we cool by sweating. They do not sweat like us, their panting is their way for cooling their body, but in summer this is not always enough and they can over heat easily.”
Over the summer holiday break, stay cool, stay safe. Enjoy!
